Goth Culture and BDSM

All goths are into kinky sex, right? Wrong. Life again proves that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover.

Are all goths into BDSM?

Just because a person identifies as goth does not mean they enjoy BDSM, or even that they are kinky whatsover. It can be confusing when you see all those corsets, bondage pants, and particularly the leather collars that in BDSM are reserved for submissives. The thing to remember here, and what I see as the main difference in these two sub-cultures, is that goth is mostly about fashion, whereas BDSM is clearly about a preference for certain sexual activities.

This isn’t to say that there is no overlap outside of the clothing. Some goths point to the shared interest in the darker side of life, and a desire to explore ideas and roles that are often considered taboo. Goths challenge norms with their clothing and music, but the exploration of a kinkster is often more private and not always detectable outside the bedroom. And of course, there ARE kinky goths too!

What is the link between goth culture and the BDSM scene?

Goth style developed out of the punk scene of the 70s and 80s. Spiked hair, dog collars with spikes, ripped nylons, piercings and more. Bondage pants were also popular with the punks, but none of this was actually about fetish or S and M. As goths looked for further stylistic inspiration, BDSM gear and clothing was a natural fit. Dark colors, spikes and buckles, tight pvc and black leather. In fact, many young goths who are wearing collars around their necks are completely unaware of the message this sends to others who understand their significance.

So where is the overlap outside of the fashion connection? These two cultures often meet after dark, intentionally or not. Many fetish clubs will have goth nights, and goth bars will have leather or bdsm events. An interest in goth culture can lead to a curiosity about BDSM, and dressing goth can provide a dom or sub with a way to wear their kink on their sleeve so to speak.
