Claustrophilia: Sexual Arousal in Small Tight Spaces

As someone who feels claustrophobic in small tight spaces, who can’t be in a sleeping bag unless it’s unzipped, this fetish is a hard one to understand. But with all kinks, to each his own. Claustrophilia is one fetish that is gaining in popularity.

What is Claustrophilia?

Merriam-Webster defines claustrophilia as : an abnormal desire for confinement in an enclosed space.

Of course, this has no sexual reference, but kinksters always know how to take any desire to the next level. This obsession may be a solo bdsm activity or something enjoyed with a lover. Similar to bondage, people with this fetish, get off on the feeling of helplessness that arises from being confined to a small place. How long they are restricted may be in another person’s control, their dominant or master. This activity needs complete trust between the submissive and dominant.

Also, being confined can alter one’s breathing, causing one to feel high, similar to autoeroticism. Fetishists say that the constriction makes them feel more aware of their bodies, limits, and sensitivities.

Where do claustrophilias like to be held captive? Trunks, coffins, closets, and the specially designed “sleepsacks” that encase one’s entire body in tight-fitting material such as spandex, latex, or leather. These sacks will have strategically placed zippers for easy access to the privates. Zentai suits are also popular among the “tight spaces” crowd. Other enthusiasts will explore their fetish with a “vacuum bed” where they lie on a board underneath a latex sheet before a pump sucks the air out between the board and the sheet, leaving a small hole left for breathing. Some say it feels like being in the womb.

This fetish can also extend to enjoying sex in tight, awkward, challenging locations such as caves, crawlspaces, washroom stalls, small cars, and closets.
