With so many interesting fetishes and kinks to choose from, why pony play?

Most kinky people will tell you they didn’t choose their fetish. You can choose to try things, you can choose to develop a fetish for whatever reason, but why is the oldest question in the book—and there is no answer.

Many little girls are obsessed with horses. My link to horses felt especially profound, like their spirit completed me. I had to be around them. It was never a sexual thing, just a compulsive one. I got really involved in grooming horses, and riding lessons, and the thrill of riding clothes and horse tack. When I found out that my name, Philippa, meant “woman who loves horses,” it felt like a deep magic hand of fate.

But I wasn’t into kinky things and didn’t hear about pony play until I was 30. As soon as I discovered this world, I understood that the most playful part of me, the most interior and most spiritual, would be fulfilled.

Is it hard to meet pony people? Do you date pony play folks, or just ask your dates to indulge this side of you?

Pony play is a whole underworld, and an old one. People pretending to be horses is a type of role play that is centuries old, and the non-fetish manifestation—pure theatre—is even older, part of mythology. Unravel ancient stories, from the centaur to native American legends, and the anthropomorphizing of horses is a recurring theme.

This means that pony play communities are quite established, and you can always find them when you’re looking. There are magazines, meetups, you name it.

That said, I date many kinds of people. If they are open minded, they don’t have to share my kink. Right now I’m dating the man I might marry; and he horses around on my behalf, not because he’s from that world.

What’s the best part of pony play?

Aside from my spiritual connection to horses, it’s just fun. I love prancing around in harnesses and embellishments. Shopping for pony play accessories is fun. Sticking something in my ass and leaving it there to attach a swinging tail to is a riot, and gets me off too.

What do you say to people who say the whole horse and pony play thing is bestiality?

There are always people who want to pervert pleasure and who don’t have a sense of theatricality or humor.

No doubt, in rare cases there are people attracted sexually to horses or other animals. But to mistake the elaborate world of pony play for this is ignorant. Horses ARE sexy, in the sense that I want to take on their attributes like beauty and power. They are majestic. I have zero desire to mate with horses. Rather, I get off dressing like one!

Sex is ritual theatre, and it’s fantasy. Here we are shapeshifting, we play at becoming our animal familiars.

For most pony play people, it’s S and M—the humiliation of being animalized. That’s not it for me. I love to be gagged and whipped as you ride me, but not for the degradation of “being an animal.”

I am exalted as a horse. I think that’s a difference with show ponies and cart ponies or riding ponies—the main thing for them is service, which may involve a servile attitude. For me, it’s about my destiny as a star thoroughbred, and all the fun dress-up that goes with that.
