College BDSM Clubs Take another Step towards the Mainstream

College Couple Kissing

Smart people love BDSM! It’s not surprising, since a recent study did show that BDSM practitioners tend to be smarter than the average person. Back in 2012, Harvard University approved a new club called Harvard College Munch. It’s a BDSM club for students of the esteemed university. By being recognized as an on campus organization, the kinky college students could now have meals on college grounds and promote their events as well. Like other munches, Harvard students report seeing play at the meetings, including one girl who said she had tried getting spanked by a riding crop, belts, floggers and canes at a Munch. Meetups such as these can provide a lot of support for college students who are exploring their sexuality, and can give them the space to explore in a safe, sane and consensual environment.

“I wish I had this club at my college,” laughed Gina, a member services representative for BDSM Date, and a kinky sub herself. “I was totally in the closet about my fetishes when I was a college co-ed. We have a lot of young members who want to explore their sexuality. Kinksters in college today have access to so much more knowledge, community and information. This is just one example of how that access is opening up people’s minds to alternative sexual practices.”

Other colleges and universities have had BDSM clubs before, and many have other groups that are related to sexuality such as a gay/straight alliance. In 2003, Iowa State University also funded a bondage club, which sought to educate fellow students about safety practices and proper bondage techniques. Ivy League school Princeton started a BDSM club called Princeton in the Nations Service shortly after the Harvard College Munch was approved. Princeton’s group states that they are a completely sober group that is for discussion and to bring the local BDSM community together on campus. PINS also seeks to bring up issues surrounding consent, and make sure that new BDSM practitioners are up to speed.

Perhaps it’s the popularity of 50 Shades of Grey or maybe just the availability of information about BDSM on the net, but it seems like kinky sex acts are becoming more accepted everywhere — even on college campuses.
