Kinky Confessions: Claustrophilia Fetish

This week’s confession comes from a man who loves to be confined…

I’m a claustrophile (opposite of claustrophobe) and adore being confined in relatively small spaces, like steamer trunks, wardrobes, tiny closets, sleeping bags, etc.  My wife is sympathetic, and dominant enough to enjoy such control, especially if combined with air rationing, breath play etc. Many years experience… love to discuss/share/advise/be advised/learn/teach. – J.

Merriam Webster medical definition of claustrophila: an abnormal desire for confinement in an enclosed space. This definition does not mention anything about sexual arousal, and isn’t always part of a kink or turn on.

As someone who can feel claustrophobic at times, I have a hard time relating to this fetish. I browsed online to find others who share our reader’s love of small spaces, as well as articles related to claustrophilia.

“Small places feel more secure. I can’t sleep out in the open. No matter how hot, I MUST be covered. And the blanket must be tucked around under my feet. It can’t be tucked into the mattress… that creates that angle going down and doesn’t feel secure. It has to be CLOSED.”

“Another closely related paraphilia to claustrophilia would appear to be taphephilia, Dr. Aggrawal defines taphephilia as deriving sexual pleasure and arousal from being buried alive. I have to say that when I first read about this paraphilia I had major doubts about it’s existence until I came across groups such as the Six Feet Under Club and the Buried Stories website.” – “Space invaders: A brief overview of claustrophilia”, Dr. Mark Griffiths

According to Wikipedia, famous sci-fi author Isaac Asimov also had a penchant for tiny places:

“Asimov was a claustrophile; he enjoyed small, enclosed spaces. In the first volume of his autobiography, he recalls a childhood desire to own a magazine stand in a New York City Subway station, within which he could enclose himself and listen to the rumble of passing trains while reading.”

Another device popular among claustrophilics is the vacuum bed or “vacbed”: a platform topped with a latex sheet. A user slips beneath the sheet, head and all; a pump sucks all air from between the latex and the board, shrink-wrapping the user, who breathes through a tiny hole or tube.” – “Turned On by Tight Spaces”, Psychology Today
