Furry Fandom and Terminology

Couple in Animal Costumes

I used to think furries were just a group of people who find sexual pleasure in dressing up as cute, fur-covered creatures of the forest. I had no idea that it was an entire lifestyle, complete with online communities and even its own language.

Those who identify as furries feel a very personal connection to the creatures they choose to represent. The whole scene is fuelled by a mix of anthropomorphism, art and sexuality. They even have massive furry conventions that draw people from all over the world.

If you find yourself at one of these furry gatherings or fall for a furry, you’ll want to be prepared with some knowledge of the specialized terms you might hear.

Furry Terms

Yiffing

Basically, this is a euphemism for sexual intercourse within the furry community. It’s also the sound a fox makes and can sometimes be used to denote excitement. When using it in a sentence one might say, “We certainly heard a great deal of yiffing coming from your hotel room last night!”

Scritching

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Scritching is the act of gently scratching another Furry’s costume. It’s meant as a gesture of kindness and endearment and can be a precursor to Furplay. “Please may I scritch you behind the ears, Mr. Fox?”

Furplay

Yep, this is just what it sounds like—the furry version of foreplay. I didn’t read far enough into the particulars of furry culture to really discover what furplay entails, though I would assume there’s a lot of heavy petting. (Sorry about that one.)

Murrr

This is the sound one might make while engaged in some really satisfying furplay. It’s akin to the purrr of a cat, and arises under similar circumstances of happiness and relaxation. I’m not sure if furries dressed as cats are still considered to murrr? If you know the answer, please leave us a comment.

Nuzzlick

Again, this term is fairly self-descriptive. A nuzzlick is essentially some nuzzling action mixed with a few licks. It’s kind of a sexually heightened nuzzle, or a precursor to furplay. (Can you tell I enjoy writing the word, furplay?)

Fursona

Another term for furry alter ego. Jordan, who is a software designer from Deluth Iowa, might only introduce himself as his fursonaAsrtrica the Squirrel—and that’s his God-given right to do so!

Do you have any furry stories to share? We’d love to hear them.
