Spandex Fetish: From Swimsuits to Superheroes

Do you have a Spandex fetish?

Does your heart beat faster when you hear the 80s are back in fashion? Do you drool in front of VHS aerobic exercise discards at the local thrift store? Do you watch gymnastics and ice skating competitions religiously, and superhero films even though you’re not a comic book guy?

If so, you might have a Spandex fetish.

Sexy Spandex

Spandex—also called lycra, and known as “elastane’ in Europe—is a synthetic fabric or textile fibre known for its supreme elasticity.

Spandex was invented in 1958 by Dupont Chemicals. It is a polyether polyurea copolymer. Spandex is popular with women of various body shapes for the sheer practicality of its stretching properties, and with athletes and dancers of all genders who prize fabric flexibility.

Spandex is actually an anagram of “expands.” The stretchy fabric is often added to other fabrics like denim to make jeans fit like a glove at every curve, and it allows movement with ease in bathing suits, leggings, cycling gear, cosplay costumes, and more.

Spandex became a major fashion statement among the fit and feather-haired 80s aerobics crowd. This form-fitting fabric naturally found its way into fetish wear because it clings to every nook and cranny of the body, and accentuates every curve and line. Spandex makes kinky garments easier to put on and to wear.

What Is a Spandex Fetish?

The Spandex fetish is sexual attraction to Spandex. Intense sexual arousal and sexual pleasure from viewing Spandex garments, touching the stretchy Lycra clothes, looking at bodies in Spandex underwear or outerwear, or from actual sex in Spandex are all expressions of a Spandex fetish or Spandex kink.

Sexual fetishism follows closely behind every invention, because humans naturally sexualize what is around them.

Just as pantyhose became one of the most common, popular and intense fetishes in kink history after their invention, the Spandex fetish followed the invention of Spandex and its growing popularity in clothing.

In addition to the fact that Spandex was destined to fetishism simply because it came into existence, the fact that Spandex was tight and acted like a second skin, highlighting the body and appearing “naked in clothing” was definitely part of the thrill.

Some Spandex fetishists describe the shine or sheen on the fabric as the driving force behind the Spandex kink. The smooth, semi-natural, semi-artificial blend has a tactile sensation that drives some of us around the bend. Spandex is sometimes viewed as a kind of BDSM or bondage wear because it is so tight.

But even though Spandex is skin tight, the body is still free to move easily in every direction, making it the preference of dancers and athletes. Widespread sexual attraction to attractive bodies in motion also drives the Spandex fetish.

Spandex was also connected to female empowerment and sexual liberation. Feminists and film stars alike saw the fabric as newfound freedom from uncomfortable women’s fashion. The clothing could be sexy and feminine and strong while also comfortable, unlike girdles and clumsy, difficult, stiff clothing.

The legendary beauty Audrey Hepburn famously posed in Lycra, along with others. Spandex foundation garments smoothed out curves and lumps, creating lines that women loved, as well as their admirers.

8 Spandex Fetishes and Related Kinks

1. Swimsuit Fetish

It’s hardly surprising that a main Spandex kink is the swimsuit fetish. The bathing suit is a form fitting garment that covers the genitals and women’s breasts, and allows free movement for swimming. In this way it accentuates what it covers, while showing off the legs, buttocks, and body shape.

Bathing suit fetishes can be specific styles such as high-cut sides, teeny bikinis, men’s shorts, and more—but they’re nearly all made with Spandex today.

2. Leggings Fetish

Skin-tight Spandex leggings are shiny and show off every part of the leg, striking that sensual combination of nature and artifice. The butt and upper thigh and pussy are tantalizingly “right there” on display, only covered by the Lycra skin.

3. Superhero Sex

The marvelous world of Marvel and other superhero and superheroine stories in popular culture is super sexual—visually and in the deep cultural and archetypal themes of courage, bravery, beauty, and good versus evil.

It only makes sense that the superheroes we love and want to emulate we also “love.” Superheroes often wear Spandex in order to jump, kick, fly, and contort. Many with a Spandex fetish prefer the specific Spandex clothes of superheroes, and dress the part for roleplay and superhero sex.

4. Cosplay Sex

Roleplay in costumes, and even identifying as different people, animals, or pop culture figures is behind the massive cosplay scene. Cosplay, or dressing up in different costumes, is fun and relaxing.

Cosplay is not always sexual, but it can be and there is a cosplay sex subculture. Not all costumes are part of a Spandex fetish—there are lots of pets, movie figures, cartoon characters and more—but fairly often, cosplay sex includes Spandex as part of its driving kink.

5. Zentai Suit Fetish

The Zentai suit fetish is sexual attraction to the Zentai suit, which is essentially a full body onesie. Lots of hot, tight bodycon wear is labelled or marketed as a “Zentai” suit and can include low cut jumpers and catsuit styles, but the authentic Zentai suit covers feet, and head and even hands. They have been marketed as Morphsuits, Second Skins, or Bodysocks, and were designed for use in black light theater, athletics, and dance.

The Zentai suit fetish is part Spandex fetish and partly about the perceived depersonalization. Kind of the opposite of cosplay as the role of “nobody” is symbolically adopted.

6. Total Enclosure

The total enclosure fetish can include leather, latex, various costumes, and different kinds of bondage gear or equipment that provide the body with complete coverage.

The Zentai suit can be part of the total enclosure fetish, and other Spandex fetish expressions such as catsuits or leggings combined with mummification, bondage hoods, and more, may also fulfill this need to fully enclose.

7. Yoga Pants Fetish

Yoga pants are widely viewed as super sexy whether or not it is a full on fetish, and some of us simply find yoga pants more exciting and arousing than any other clothing!

Yoga pants are basically Spandex leggings with a flared bottom, which gives a fluid form and more curves to the aesthetic. Since yoga pants are often associated with flexibility and contortions, and yoga is a very beautiful art as well as an athletic pursuit, there are many different turn-ons converging in the yoga pants fetish.

8. Leotard Fetish

The Spandex leotard is used by ballet dancers, ice skaters, gymnasts, and bodycon fashionistas at nightclubs. It is a skin tight Spandex garment. It might have long sleeves and bare legs, or long legs and skinny straps, but it is always designed for free movement and fits like a second skin.

A leotard is essentially a kind of underwear that beautiful people move in. The leotard fetish can be for a very specific style such as a scoop neck leotard or short sleeve leotard, or it can be for any variation.
