Remember the tentacle porn reveal gaffe of a Newsweek and Vanity Fair journalist? It was a reminder for the rest of us to keep our browsers closed and swept neat.
Detractors tried to shame the writer, who posted an image that inadvertently showed he’d been looking at hentai on his computer. Some laughed at the writer’s defence. Just as all of us have said, “That’s not mine…” when caught red-handed with a skin mag or dirty browser bookmark.
And so, suddenly, the whole world now knows about tentacle porn, this deeply niched subset of pornography.
What is Tentacle Porn?
Yes, tentacle pornography is exactly what it sounds like—women getting penetrated by the tentacles of fictional monsters.
Tentacle porn is a type of hentai, or erotic manga and anime, which is a Japanese comic book art form. Tentacle erotica comes in both comic book or graphic novel style and animated film.
More specifically, it’s a unique hybrid of fantasy or sci-fi and horror in hentai style.

Types of Tentacle Porn
Tentacle hentai ranges from saucy to the hardest core porn imaginable. It can be arty and romantic but more often depicts outright rape and violence. It’s worth noting that hentai, by which we mean Japanese erotic cartoons, actually translates to something along the lines of “perverse sexual desire.”

Sexual penetration scenes with tentacled creatures has a life outside of Japanese erotic art forms, but not much of one. There have been crossovers with sci-fi fantasy films in America and horror cinema, for example, the 1970 movie The Dunwich Horror, an adaptation of a short story by H.P. Lovecraft.
Another Roger Corman film, 1980’s Galaxy of Terror is famous among B-movie aficionados for the shocking porn scene that was left out. A female astronaut was fucked by a giant tentacled worm beast, and was cut out of the film. To change the X rating, some editing changes were made to make the movie “R” instead.

Most interest in tentacle porn is more literary and artistic—or sci-fi curious—than particularly erotic. There are certainly some folks who get off on their tentacle kink, but for the majority of people it’s not really about jacking off when reading tentacle adventures.
Just as many people love sexy horror movies about demon romances, but the material is for entertainment, not for sexual arousal.
That said, there are tentacle creature and octopus costumes and tentacle-type dildos out there.

Where Did Tentacle Porn Come From?
How on earth did this stuff enter the popular imagination?
The earliest tentacle porn we know of is shunga, or Japanese erotic woodblock prints. A novel by Hokusai Katsushika was called The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife. It featured one of the first octopus erotica images we know of, in 1814. An octopus is performing cunnilingus on the wife, and she is covered in tentacles.
Curiously, such imagery proliferated thanks to Japanese censorship laws at the time. Depicting vaginal penetration by a penis was not acceptable or legal, so imaginative and horny people came out with some alternatives and soon there was a range of art showing women being fucked by the tentacles of fantasy creatures.
In this way, tentacle porn is a testament to the indomitable human spirit. When our sexuality is repressed, we find unique ways around the situation.
