Pony play is a popular type of BDSM animal play that kinksters enjoy because of its versatility in roles, its levels of training, and the wide range of pony play accessories available.
If you’ve never heard of pony play other than stable riding or the merry-go-round, here is a basic introduction and how you and your up-for-anything partner can get involved.
If you’re a horse person, this may be a perfect way to transfer your passion for ponies into your sexual adventures and BDSM play.
Pony Play Roles
Pony play usually involves two adults, with the dominant partner taking on the adult role of owner (trainer, veternarian, etc.). The submissive partner will become the pony in one of two ways:
- He/she will be expected to act like a pony (but still sees themselves as a human) and may be subjected to forms of humiliation and degradation, or
- The sub will lose his/her human persona while in the role of pony.

Types of BDSM Ponies
Cart Pony
A cart pony will be trained to pull their master/mistress in a specially designed cart, sleigh, carriage, or wagon. This is often done on two legs as it is easier. A physical regime may be part of the training to handle longer distances. Sometimes more than one pony will pull carts specially designed for more than one passenger.
Riding Pony
This can be a physically demanding role with ponies either on two or four legs, bare back, or in full saddle. Real pony saddles can be used for authenticity, but there are also saddles available at BDSM specialty shops. This pony will need to be physically fit and may also benefit from a pair of knee pads.
Show Pony
Show ponies will be trained in form and carriage and are often outfitted in fancy tack and equipment. If you love the dressing up part of role playing this might be the pony for you. Many kinksters also like to enter their show ponies in competitions and parades to show off their partners.
Pony Play Training Ideas
Some examples of basic training for pony play.
Leading Your Pony
You teach your pony where to stand in relation to yourself, how to guide the pony with reins, and how to use mild discipline as well as your voice to curb your pony’s behaviour.
Tying Your Pony
You teach your pony how to stand still, at first with a rope and then later to be “ground tied” without. Cross-tying your pony will allow you to tack and groom your pony.
Pony Grooming
This can be a very intimate experience for both trainer and pony. You can use a variety of combs, brushes, and towels for the full experience. Some pony’s wear butt-plug manes that, although add extra excitement, will need special care when grooming.
Pony Play Tack and Equipment
Pony play tack can be a lot of fun and really helps with the role playing aspect of pony play. Types of accessories include bit gags, bridles, tongue ports, bit burrs, saddles, harnesses, hooves, and masks. Some kinksters buy their equipment from tack retailers, while others will purchase from BDSM specialist shops. Warning: it does get expensive!
