9 Types of BDSM Collars

A standard necessity for many kink lovers is a BDSM collar. Depending on whether you are a Dom or sub, and what your fetishes are, you will probably need one or more BDSM collars.

There are various kinds of collars for restraint, bondage, discipline, and related kinks. The style will depend on your fetish and your personal aesthetic taste. There are different BDSM collars for every kinky desire and fantasy, from Daddy Dom/Little Girl (DDLG) to decorative collars to discipline collars.

BDSM Collar Symbolism

BDSM collars are a quintessential accessory for kinky lovers because they are a wide-ranging, time-tested symbol of dominance and submission, erotic ownership, and more.

A BDSM collar can be a subtle secret symbol or it can proclaim to the public the status of the collared. Some kinky couples use collars instead of wedding rings to signify their vows of subservience and authority.

The wearer of the collar is frequently referred to as “collared.” This means they are submissive and have accepted the dominance and control of the leader. Since collars have long signified ownership and caregiving of a pet, it is the perfect symbol for dominant and submissive couples, kinky slaves, and adventurous fetishists.

8 Types of BDSM Collars

1. BDSM Collar and Leash

Bondage collars and leashes are essential BDSM kink accessories for roleplay, dominance and submission play, and pet and primal play.

A BDSM collar and leash is exactly what it sounds like—a collar for the submissive partner to wear, and a leash for the dominant partner to tether him or her at their will.

You can splurge on gorgeous, glamourous sets in sex toy shops or fetish sites online, choosing matching sets. You can decide on padded or fuzzy models for the submissive’s comfort, or look for material that meets your kink fantasies.

No need to break the bank, however—it is extremely common and very economical to choose a collar and leash meant for dogs or other pets. You can find a range of styles at your local pet emporium, and these can serve their purpose perfectly.

2. BDSM Consideration Collar

A consideration collar is an important symbolic gesture in new BDSM relationships. It describes the first step in ritual collaring between master and slave or dominant and submissive. It can be viewed as a kind of promise ring, at the start of a potential long-term commitment.

In the “old guard” kink community, the collar of consideration is blue and leather. The consideration collar does not symbolize permanence but shows a gesture of potential ownership or mastery, and signifies that the wearer is “off the market” so to speak, and considering the relationship being offered.

3. BDSM Training Collar

A training collar follows the consideration collar. It symbolizes the fact that training of the submissive by the Dom or Domme has begun.

4. BDSM Permanent Collar

A permanent BDSM collar is often permanent, never to be taken off, but more usually it is permanent symbolically, like a wedding ring.

Practically, most Dom and sub couples want to use a variety of collars for BDSM play, and thus, the permanent collar is permanent in significance. It is the last collar in the collaring rituals. This happens when a submissive accepts a dominant’s collar, or mastery, on a permanent basis. It usually occurs in a ceremony, just like a wedding.

5. BDSM Shock Collar

A BDSM shock collar is a special torture collar for a Domme to train their sub. During training, the master or mistress, or top can administer shocks to punish for misdeeds or other disciplinary requirements.

6. BDSM Choke Collar

The choke collar is a BDSM collar that works in the same way as a shock collar but uses choking to control the wearer. This works in the same way that choke chains work for overactive or aggressive dogs that need to be subdued.

BDSM choke collars are also popular with those who enjoy being choked, as part of discipline or not, such as breath play or edge play. These collars must be easily released for safety, so choose carefully!

7. Locking BDSM Collar

The locking collar is fetish wear or symbolism that only the dominant can take off.

There are all kinds of BDSM collars in this category. Many have an ornamental padlock for visual enjoyment that doesn’t lock anything at all. Others cannot be removed without a key or secret code, so the sub cannot take their collar off unless they have permission and action from their master.

8. BDSM Posture Collar

The BDSM posture collar is specially designed with a sub’s posture in mind. It is for training to sit, stand, and lie in position. It is rigid and wide enough to restrict movement, keeping the sub’s head held high and chin up. The sub cannot look down or move their head easily and is dependent on instruction and guidance from their Dom or Domme.

The neck and corset collar is a type of BDSM posture collar that resembles and ties up like a corset. It often includes a head harness and gag.

9. Custom BDSM Collar

Even with all these examples, the truth is BDSM collars can be custom-made with a variety of materials and styles.

Leather is the BDSM classic, but BDSM collars can also be made from rubber, latex, and stainless steel. They can be a piece of BDSM jewelry, a simple symbolic nylon cord or ribbon, or an elaborate leather contraption with a full harness attached. They can be lace or silk or satin. They can be industrial.

Some custom-made BDSM collars have hardware attached, and others feature precious stones. Collars are commonly black, but red, pink, and silver are also popular. BDSM collars can even be made in vegan materials for those who eschew leather.
