Origins of the Mother-Son Fantasy
In 1910, sex-obsessed psychiatrist Sigmund Freud coined a name for his theory that male children experience sexual attraction towards their mother and sexual jealousy towards their father: he called it The Oedipus Complex.
Many psychologists have dismissed Freud’s analyses that every human thought and action is motivated by sex as too simplistic. It is true indeed that humans have a variety of motivations that include survival, spirituality, cultural, and social needs. However, Freud was one of the few at the time who took sexuality seriously as a complex system of personal, psychological, social and physical needs, and saw that our imagination is indeed partly motivated by our sexuality.
Subjects that were long taboo were given serious consideration, and Freud saw the obvious: part of our development as sexual creatures responded to our relationships with our families. It only made sense that our first sexual attachments and awakenings could happen in response to our mother. It is absolutely normal and common for people to experience sexual attraction towards their parents.
This was known long before Freud—that’s why he named his theories after Oedipus, a character from ancient mythology who was in love with his mother. Cultural and religious institutions understood it, too, and made a blanket condemnation of incest. Freud broke with the tradition of knee-jerk judgement and tried to understand the motivation instead.
Incest Fetish is Taboo yet Common
Incest is taboo and illegal in many places, often carrying a lengthy prison sentence, even for consenting adults. This stems in part from necessary protection of children from abuse by adults, and in part from the fact that close relatives can produce offspring with disabilities and disfigurations.
Forbidden or not, incest fantasies are extremely common, and there are even advocates for legal change for incest between consenting adults. These activists call for an end to discrimination against adult love that they call consanguinamory.
Far more prevalent than actual incest, of course, is the fantasy of incest. The kink imagination is a rich and complex array of desires, a theatrical journey that spans ages, bodies, experiences, and roles. We all have fantasies that excite us that we don’t play out in real time, and some of these we don’t actually want to experience for real.
Our minds are quite adept at sorting out fantasy from reality: the idea of a sexual experience may be far more exciting to us than the reality.
