Mummification Bondage Techniques and Safety

Mummification is a very specific form of extreme bondage. It involves being completely bound, like a mummy.

The allure of mummification is understandable: to feel contained and therefore safe, the erotic thrill of complete immobilization, the meditative experience of being totally restrained, the submissive excitement of surrendering all movement to a dominant.

Exploring Mummification Bondage

You will find more and more people practicing total enclosure, another term used to describe mummification. It’s a form of bondage, something BDSM newbies often begin with, and also crosses over with other fetishes such as BDSM body bags, rubber/latex, vacuum packing, and Zentai suits.

What is Mummification Kink About?

Mummification bondage is often enjoyed by those who have experience with BDSM and may be in dominant-submissive relationships. The submissive partner is generally the one who is wrapped or immobilized and who enjoys the complete sense of helplessness.

Not being able to move at all can be a huge stimulant to those wrapped, as well as a big turn-on for the one disabling their movements.

Depending on the wrap and environment they are in, one can experience mild-to-severe sensory deprivation. Conversely, sensory play (sexual or nonsexual) can become heightened when one partner cannot react with movement… think tickle torture!

Most practitioners want to be tightly wrapped. The cocoon or incubating feeling is important, and the helplessness and vulnerability of the bound person is a way of enhancing complete trust in the other.

If mummification practices are something you’re curious about, they’re best approached with a light hand—it can be fun to restrain someone with a loosely rolled blanket.

If you love to be deprived of sensation, deeply humiliated, or practice extreme bondage, make sure you follow the safety tips below or learn how to play safely from someone with experience.

4 Types of Mummification Bondage

The type of wrapping used for mummification bondage is a personal preference, and there are many materials that can be employed. Some you can find in your home, while others are sold specifically for mummification.

Beyond the types of mummification outlined below, other popular methods and materials include bandages, duct tape, rubber strips, straight jackets,  bodybags, plaster bandages, and even coffins.

1. Plastic Wrap

It’s cheap, easy, transparent, and it’s quick to get out of should trouble arise. Yep, using good, old-fashioned plastic wrap can be a great way to enjoy a fun mummification session.

Getting into it is easy—have the person being bound stand with a low surface behind them (a massage table is perfect), then begin wrapping them, starting at the upper chest (never the neck) and going down. When you get to their waist, stop and gently ease them down onto the table. Once they are there you can then lift their legs and complete the mummification.

One extra tip is to try and use plastic wrap that breathes and allows some moisture to come through as the non-porous variety can cause overheating very quickly.

2. Vet Wrap Mummification

These self-adhesive bandages are a great way to try out mummification while also diminishing any potential overheating, though don’t totally ignore the risk.

Application is very similar to plastic wrap: start with the person being bound standing next to a low table, then begin wrapping around the upper chest.

Vet Wrap breathes better, gives a nice level of flexibility so the mummy won’t have any impediments to respiration, and allows them the option to move a bit (perfect for those who like to be immobilized, but who also suffer from anxiety).

And an extra plus is that this kind of bondage is pretty easy to get out of—just use your always-at-the-ready emergency scissors, and with a few snips they’re out.

3. Latex Sheets and Bondage Tape

The latex mummification technique may not be the cheapest, but the results can be spectacular.

Use a sheet of latex, and drape it over the person being bound. For a more encompassing sensation, also place a sheet under them—latex will gently adhere to itself, so the mummy will be totally immobilized.

Keep overheating in mind throughout, as latex does not breathe. If the mummy wants out, all you need is to peel the two sheets apart, or use your emergency sheers.

For tape, it’s exactly like using bandages, except that latex doesn’t give as much and traps in heat and moisture (though not as much as latex sheets).

4. Bed Sheet Mummification

If you want to wrap someone up but don’t have the money to buy latex, bed sheets are the answer!

It might sound silly, but it works really well. For one, it can be comfortable and reassuring for someone to be mummified in their bedclothes. For another, it breathes and so allows for the mummy to move a bit to get more comfortable.

Have your subject lay down on a sheet, then either use another sheet or if the first one is big enough just fold and then tuck it under them. How tight you make it is up to you or your playmate, though do keep those scissors handy and be prepared to use them at a moment’s notice—even if they are your favorite sheets!

Mummification Bondage Safety

Compared to different kinds of bondage play, including ropes or BDSM restraints, the risks with mummification bondage are relatively low. However, as with any kind of BDSM play, there are still safety precautions to practice.

While things like the dangers of cutting off circulation, tendon tears, or even nerve damage are not usually something to keep in mind, you should still be aware of two major risks: overheating and panic attacks.

Overheating is a concern, as it is ridiculously easy for a person being mummified, with their body heat being trapped, to suffer from heat prostration and even to pass out.

Claustrophobia is another worry. Even the most experienced player can still have a panic attack and must be released from being mummified immediately at the first signs.

The solution to both of these mummification risks is rather simple: never put someone into total bondage without having a way of getting them out as quickly as possible. Emergency shears, by the way, are great for quick release. Another tip to avoid potential problems is to stay in constant contact with the person being bound so that you will see signs of anxiety or being overheated.

Perhaps the most important safety tip: never ever put anything over the bound person’s face or impede their breathing. That is truly a recipe for disaster!

Other Techniques for Restricting Movement

Let’s say your bottom doesn’t have a large amount of experience being mummified, but he or she is really into the idea of being totally restrained. The solution is outside the box!

For instance, consider immobilizing without having to mummify them. Sounds odd, but all you will need is a dozen or so small plastic cups and water. Put a bit of water in the cups, and then carefully position them on the person being restrained so that if they move, even a little, the water spills. Not only is this totally safe, but the focus and discipline required can also be a total turn on.

Not keen on getting wet? Try a pair of bells connected by a chain or string. Just drape these over the mummy so that any movement rings them. For D/s couples who love bondage roleplay, these two techniques can incorporate reward and punishment for spilling the water or ringing the bells.

If there are any big takeaways from this, it’s to never ignore what might happen and be prepared to get your mummy out of its wrapping as fast as possible.

Follow our tips and techniques, and you’ll be on the path to, excuse the expression, getting totally wrapped up in this kink!
