What Is Femdom?

Femdom stands for female domination, and it is nothing new. The dominatrix, or domme, is a longstanding archetype of female power and control.

Femdom is an erotic encounter, fetish, or relationship between a male and female where she takes total authority, dominance, and control over him.

The female dominatrix has been manifest as queen, goddess, vampire, earth mother, cruel stepmother, rocker bitch, empress, and many more. There is something absolutely gorgeous and exciting about turning the tables on traditional gender roles and putting all the power in female hands.

That sexual power switch is at the heart of the femdom fascination.

What Femdom Means to Women vs Men

Perhaps what has changed in contemporary sexuality, versus its constant but underground presence in kink and fetish life, is that femdom is not about male fantasy but female desire. While certainly women may have enjoyed dominating men, and men in droves are looking for a femdom to fulfill their own submission desires, in femdom his desires are not the motivating factor—they’re kind of irrelevant.

Femdom is theoretically about the female pursuing sexual power and male humiliation and bondage for her own fulfillment. If he is also fulfilled and satisfied, that is beside the point. Historically, female domination was often entrepreneurial, filling a role in the market to cater to his desire to worship and submit.

Of course, there are many ways to play with femdom and many kinds of relationships and desires.

A woman may indeed choose to play the femdom way because her lover desires it. He may not be submissive, but choose to switch roles to satisfy her needs. Or someone might try it or play that way with one particular lover and not others.

There are many variations of femdom. But at its heart, it’s all about her.

Different styles and types of female domination may be different facets of a whole femdom relationship, or they may be her preferred practice.

1. Gentle Femdom

Gentle femdom can be playful, nurturing, loving, and warm. It’s basically all about femdom or female sexual authority but without inflicting pain. There may be humiliation or punishment but it will be milder and more nurturing. Spanking would be milder and involve snuggling after. Gentle femdom is anything from woman-on-top sex to role-playing with her as mommy, teacher, or nurse.

Gentle femdom may be more pleasure focused than pain and punishment-focused. Some see it as “gateway” femdom or beginner femdom, and it can be both. But lots of couples, even vanilla, often and naturally incorporate gentle femdom into their play as part of the range of human sexuality.

2. Femdom Mommy

The femdom mommy is nurturing, powerful, and loving. She wants to lavish affection on her young charge, a special kind of submissive called a “Little” who is a consenting adult in age play or roleplay.

But Mommy femdom is also aware that mother knows best, and she expects obedience.

3. Chastity Femdom

Chastity femdom is when the femdom has total domination over his chastity.

She controls when and if he can experience sexual pleasure, whether masturbation, sexual contact with the femdom herself, or any other sexual partner.

It can range from a femdom dictating who he sleeps with or if he’s allowed to sleep with his partners, sometimes by text or consultation, to keeping him in a room in bondage. Chastity devices that need a lock and key or hand restraints are the most common ways to play.

4. BDSM Femdom

The classic model of dominatrix and male submissive falls into BDSM femdom.

BDSM fetishes are the staples of kink in general. Bondage, discipline, sadism, and masochism involve many kinds of expression but commonly include whips, handcuffs, obedience, leather, latex, pain, and humiliation. Of course, in BDSM femdom, she’s the dominant and he is the submissive.

5. Cuckold Femdom

Cuckold play is a kind of sexual humiliation where a man’s wife or lover can’t be sexually satisfied by him, possibly because he can’t maintain an erection, comes too fast, has a small penis, or is simply not as attractive and vigorous as her other lover or lovers.

Cuckolding in the femdom context simply means that she sleeps with whomever she pleases and places her satisfaction as a priority, humiliating her submissive for his shortcomings, whether or not cuckolding is specifically his fantasy.

6. Humiliation Femdom

If the femdom gets off on the humiliation of her submissive male or is willing to satisfy his desire for humiliation play, this is humiliation femdom.

Humiliation can be psychological, physical, erotic, or a combination of some or all these. Telling him he’s worthless, useless, has a small penis, and other psychological tactics are popular. Sissification or feminization play are forms of humiliation femdom. That is when a male sub is humiliated by being forced to wear female clothing.

Humiliation can take unique expressions depending on the tastes and desires of the femdom and her submissive.

7. Financial Femdom (Findom)

Financial femdom or financial domination is sometimes called findom. It is exactly as it sounds—financial domination.

Financial femdom is when a woman controls and dominates her submissive financially. It can be as simple as one donation from a submissive to complete power over a sub’s financial decisions and all his money.

Financial femdom is usually non-sexual and frequently there is zero physical contact at all. Many findom relationships never meet each other in person. It is a form of BDSM where he is a willing slave but does not receive sexual favors in return. He is a money slave, a cash piggy, a human ATM, or a pay pig. She is the cash master or the money mistress.

Findom comes from the belief on the part of at least the sub and often both sub and domme that men are inferior. She should be indulged in every luxury, and he should give away all of his earnings above subsistence for her superiority.
